Roses are neon pink, cheeses are blue…

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a great Valentine’s Day!

I received my first Valentine’s rose this year! I’ve never been one to celebrate Valentine’s Day (as I have yet to have grabbed myself a good boyfriend) except to occasionally receive chocolates and candies from friends. So I was pleasantly surprised when Wengang and Liwen presented me with a random pink rose last night…A rose plush, that is!

Yup, it’s not a real rose, but I like this one much better because I get to keep it and enjoy it much longer than a fleeting, withering real rose! What’s more, it’s a funky bright pink!

It’s silly, but this small act of affection really made me happy. I feel so blessed and thankful to Wengang and Liwen. Not only have they been the most gracious hosts to me by letting me stay at their house during my stint in Singapore, they have practically treated me and cared for me like a little sister.

I hope you all realized once again how many loving and precious people are around you this Valentine’s Day too~

Okay, on to today’s eats.

I’m quite proud of myself today: I had full-fat, dense cheese with lunch: blue cheese! (Or is it bleu cheese? Anyone wanna enlighten me to the correct spelling?) One of my lovely blog readers, Nanete (who doesn’t own a blog herself), asked me if I ate any other cheese besides Mozzarella and Parmesan and low-fat American cheese.

My answer was that I’m a cheap Asian girl and try to buy the cheaper cheese. This is partly true, but then I realized that there was another reason of which I had been purposefully unconscious: mozzarella and Parmesan are pretty low-cal cheese compared to other cheeses like cheddar and brie, so of course my ED reached for them more readily!

Well, recently my local grocery store has been promoting a good sale on blue (bleu) cheese (one of the most calorie-dense cheeses), so I no longer had the excuse of saving money to prevent myself from trying out another challenging food. So I bought it, and it has been sitting in my fridge and has been sitting there like a sore in my eye for a few days. And today I decided to finally do something about that sore.

I’ve only ever had blue cheese in my salads, but didn’t want to stick to ED-safe, low-calorie things like that. So I decided to incorporate it into a sandwich. I made: Blue Cheese and Apple Open-faced Sandwiches and my usual Sweet Ham and Cheese Sammie.

The ingredients were minimal and simple for the blue cheese and apple sandwiches. I just popped pieces of whole-wheat bread with chunks of blue cheese on top, and when the bread got toasty and the cheese melty, spread the cheese evenly around the surface of the bread. Then topped it off with thin-sliced Granny Smith apples.

DSC01669

It tasted grrrrrrrreat! The blue cheese was so pungent and flavorful and creamy, and it matched incredibly well with the sweet tartness and crispness of the green apple.

I really patted myself on the back because not only did I conquer my full-fat cheese fear, but I also increased my intake from my usual two sandwiches to three! YaHOO~

And then afternoon snack I had a very happy time with my old friends again:

Peanut pancake and Japanese cheese pancake!

I have to confess something here: Because of the higher-calorie lunch, I chickened out and planned to just get one pancake for snack. But when I ordered my peanut pancake from the Jollibean store, the lady gave me a smaller pancake than usual! Okay, it wasn’t that much smaller, maybe about 90% the size of the usual ones, but I got pissed. Pissed enough to buy another pancake! Haha!

This is a huge breakthrough for me, because usually I would grab any excuse to eat less, and would have been super ecstatic and relieved to be given a smaller size pancake. Thus I was pretty surprised at my irritation and greed. Hee hee. I like being greedy, at least for now.

I remember when I used to be a selfish greedy little girl, getting into petty little fights with my siblings over who got the larger serving of snacks. But ED has really twisted things around and instead I began fighting to get the smallest piece! (Or any at all) So you can see why I’m glad to recover my greedy little self again!

That’s it for today, I am having another of my Eggplasta pudding for dinner right now, but you already know what it looks like so no picture~ But, let me end this post with this pretty cool picture of ME in the glow-in-the-dark room of the Singapore Zoo!

I like how my face still remains anonymous…This makes me feel so…mysterious and cool, like an FBI international spy or something…But actually, in reality, I just look like a perfect replica of one of the glow-in-the-dark skeletons they were selling in that room. Grrr. Must gain weight.

That's an adorable Valentine's rose!

As to cheese: I think it can be either. I usually write "bleu" because that's the French spelling, but I don't think anyone cares. Apparently, "bleu" actually refers to an entire family of French cheeses wherein the mixture is "pierced" to let the mold develop.

...I don't even like bleu cheese. Haha.

Im not a big fan of blue cheese but that sammie looks good!

Also, I totally would make my own soup but I live in a teeny 4X4' (ok, im exaggerating) dorm room and the most I can do cooking wise is throw something in the microwave! lol It's no fun because I love to cook, but owell!

Thanks for commenting on my blog!

I love looking at your food; it is so different - makes me realize there is so much food out there that I have yet to try!

You are a very strong person dealing with ED and working hard to come out of it!

Hmm I'm pretty sure that it's bleu, but I hate it so I don't practice spelling it that much!

Great job challenging ED! Enjoy your Sunday.

Blue (or bleu whatever!) is not my favorite, but I still enjoy it and I think it would be particularly great with apples. Today has been such a big breakthrough for you! CONGRATS! Hello!

(It's bleu cheese, if you're curious.)

I've just started reading your blog, and find myself agreeing with you so much.

Particularly this: "I remember when I used to be a selfish greedy little girl, getting into petty little fights with my siblings over who got the larger serving of snacks. But ED has really twisted things around and instead I began fighting to get the smallest piece!"

I did the same thing! Only recently have I began to not care about my portion in relation to others.

I was never anorexic or bulimic, but I'm honest enough with myself to admit that I've flirted with an ED. What most likely "saved me" from a full-blown hookup was an interest in whole foods that overtook low calorie and the fact I have a roommate. I don't mean to sound like I'm some wannabe little victim, and I have never experienced the true horror of full-blown anorexia, but I feel some camaraderie.

Thanks for commenting on my blog, btw! I'll definitely be reading yours in the future!
