Turned off by offals

Warning: Some of you are going to be turned off by what I ate yesterday. Some of you might be interested, some of you might even be proud of me. As for me, I check all the above categories: I was both turned off and fascinated, and really quite proud of myself for being adventurous.

Lunch was at a hawker center called Old Airport Road Food Center with Adrienne and Suyun, two of my church friends. We all ordered a dish and shared among ourselves. As the blog title reveals, I had pig offal during lunch. No, I wasn't the one who ordered it; it was Suyun. Apparently this dish is one of her favorites.

This pig offal dish is quite famous in Singapore, and is available in practically any food courts. It is called kway chap: pork and various 'spare parts' such as small and big intestines, pork belly and lard, with accompaniments such as tofu, boiled egg and pickled vegetables, stewed in some thick, dark soysauce mixture. It comes with some kind of flat, smooth rice noodles in its "soup." Check it out:

And these are the noodles:

I had exactly three bites of this dish, each a different part of the pork. I think I had a piece of small intestine, a piece of big intestine, and another flat thing that I think is the "skin." It was flat and slippery, anyway.

I had to douse each piece in lots of chili sauce to get rid of that meaty, innard taste! It was quite an adventure, but by the fourth bite, I just had to spit it out because I was this close to puking. If you're ever in Singapore, you might want to give this a try, but be forewarned that it's not for those faint in heart! The taste is very very strong and overbearing!

Adrienne ordered the ubiquitous Hokkien mee, which I had a couple bites of:

Of course I like my own dish the best. I ordered 3 chives and 2 mushroom soon kueh, which is a sticky glutinous rice dumplings filled with sauteed veggies. I was quite surprised at the amount of oil oozing out, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

I had 2 and a half of the chives soon keuh, and one and a half of the mushroom. Dipped in lots of chili sauce, of course! I love Singapore chili!

After lunch we went for a walk at MacRitchie Reservoir. I was quite relieved to see that it has hardly changed the last time I was here, which was 9 years ago. The weather was perfect: breezy and not too humid! But on the way back...I was attacked by a monkey! This big ol' mama monkey bounded over and grabbed my water bottle! We had a little tug-of-war, and the freaking monkey won! She scampered off with my water bottle into the jungle and proceeded to smash it around, trying to get it open.

God, I can't believe I got robbed by a freaking monkey. If I had a little bit more meat on me, that monkey probably wouldn't have been so brave. I mean, look how it picked on me out of the three of us! It knew exactly who was the weakest!

That night I had disciple training meeting at church, so dinner was fast and simple:

Cooked cabbage and a big bowl of plain yogurt with chopped apples and cinnamon.

And then (unpictured) I had two big fat roasted sweet potatoes during the meeting, downed with a mug of coffee. I needed that caffeine, because I was actually quite tired from my long day.

As for today, I ate out for lunch again, but this time stuck to something much less thrilling than kway chap! I had the MOS spicy burger from MOS burger, a fast food restaurant prevalent in Singapore:

It was delicious! It's like a sloppy joe and a hamburger!

There's a beef patty, topped off with mayonnaise and jalepenos, and then a huge dollop of beef/onion/tomato sauce mixture. Yum! I think I want to recreate this dish at home too! Don't think it should be too hard...

I ate this with some salad I brought with me from home. I wasn't really allowed to eat outside food, but shhhhh....

When I got home I was craving roasted sweet potatoes again, but unfortunately I had finished them all yesterday, so had the next best thing instead:

I had roasted winter squash...and then went for seconds. They're just as sweet and delicious as sweet potatoes!

For dinner, I had that eggplant-pasta egg pudding bake thingy again. (Stil have not come up with a good name for it...any ideas please?) But this time I made a few changes: I added more cheese, added one more egg white, and left out the egg yolks until the very end.

Delicious~ As you all already know I love runny egg yolks! It is pure liquid gold!
Heh, I think I've found a new favorite comfort meal!~ I'm probably still gonna experiment around to "perfect" it though...Maybe next time I'll top it off with some parmesan cheese? What do you guys think?

Alright, I'm off to enjoy my next meal, and will leave you guys with one last delicious picture!

This morning's bowl of fruit: pear, orange, grapefruit, dragonfruit, kiwi...

10 burps~:
